By Public Transport

Freiburg is well-served by a tram (Strassenbahn) network with five lines numbered 1-5. The conference venue Universitätszentrum is directly at the tram stop Stadttheater, which serves all five tram lines. Stadttheater is one stop away from the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) via lines 1, 2, 3 or 4. The Paulussaal is served by the lines 2 and 3 (from the main station direction Günterstal and Vauban) with stops at Holzmarkt and Johanneskirche. From both stops the Paulussaal can be reached within about 3 – 5 minutes.

The tram network runs every day from 04:30 to 01:00, with arrivals typically 5-10 minutes apart. Longer waits (up to 20 minutes) may occur after 22:00. Upcoming arrivals are indicated on the electronic board found at each stop. The timetable can be found at each stop, as well as in the online journey planner here or in the smartphone app “VAG mobil” (iOS/Android)

Please note that no ticket for public transport in Freiburg is included in the conference fee. Please purchase an appropriate ticket if required. Tickets can be purchased with the VAG (Freiburger Verkehrs AG), using the vending machines in the tram and at some stations.

Tickets and pricing

Tickets can be bought from a machine on any tram, and at some larger tram stops. The ticket machine interface can be put into English (and a selection of other languages) using the flag icons at the bottom of the screen. The entire tram network is contained within price category (Preisstufe) 1 — all quotes in this section are for price category 1. There are several options for tickets, the most economical choice depending on the level of use required;

- An adult single ticket (Einzelfahrschein Erwachsene) costs 2.70 € and is valid for a single journey up to one hour after purchase. No validation is required.

- The short-distance ticket costs 1.70 € and is valid for one trip over 3 stops, not including the entry stop.

- A daily ticket can be bought for for 6.30 €, valid for the whole tram network. It is valid from the time of purchase until the end of operations.

- Weekly tickets are not available.

By Car

To get to the university centre, take the exit Freiburg Mitte and continue towards Stadtmitte/Universität. Then turn left into Werthmannstraße followed by right into Rempartstraße. Parking places can be found in the Uni-Parkhaus.

By Train

The Paulussaal with the plenary talks and symposiums is about 1,3 km from the main station, the campus buildings about 600 m. If you prefer to take the tram to Paulussaal, please take the lines 2 (Direction Günterstal) oder 3 (Direction Vauban) and get out at Holzmarkt or Johanneskirch. See network map.

By Plane

The nearest airports are Basel/Mulhouse, Stuttgart and Frankfurt. From Basel there is a shuttle bus (Flixbus, approx. 1 hour) to Freiburg, from Stuttgart or Frankfurt it is possible to reach Freiburg by taking a Deutsche Bahn train (approx. 2 hours).
